The fitness world is a bit intimidating, right? You decide to head to the gym but you are nervous. Your mind tells you that everyone is going to be staring at you because you’re new. While that isn’t really the case at gyms, there is a different route that you can take. This route is much shorter and the decisions are yours to make. If this sounds like something you are interested in, keep reading.

The First Step

It’s important to decide what you enjoy doing or could enjoy doing for exercise. This decision is the key piece in taking the first step to fitness. Don’t get overwhelmed, let’s take this one step-by-step. Imagine you are in a place that you enjoy. The setting is just right and you are having a great time. You are relaxed but you are currently moving. Keep that thought and picture how you are moving. The how helps determine your ideal first step toward fitness. You could be biking a path along the water. You may be running along the ocean in the morning as the sun rises. You may be skiing the mountains on the perfect sunny day. Whatever this motion is will help determine which piece of fitness equipment you’d most likely enjoy.

I’ll help you out a little bit more. If you were running, you’re ideal fit is the treadmill. If you are biking you’ll find an upright bike ideal (and quite possibly a spinning bike, depending on how fast you were going). If you were skiing you would likely prefer the gliding motion of an elliptical that provides a cloud like feel. In time you may wish to expand your options, but we have a first step now.

It is important to understand that not all equipment is made equal. You need to focus on the long term versus the short term. You are making an investment in yourself. This investment is for the long term and should be a one-and-done deal. Buy something that is going to last because it’s not ideal to start a journey only to have it stall with lower grade equipment. It IS good to be eager to get started, but be sure to make an informed decision.
